Win a personalized paperweight by helping a family pick a puppy!

As mentioned in my post last week (Farewell Scout), I ordered a personalized paperweight for my brother's family as a gift to remember their 16 year old beagle. They are a family of animal lovers and are now in the process of deciding what kind of dog to get to fill this empty part of their family. Charming Cards is offering a personalized paperweight by Stacy Claire Boyd to the reader who submits the best suggestion on choosing another dog. Simply reply with your comment here with your idea for a breed of dog good for a family with 2 young children (8 & 11). Winner will be announced April 30th!

My recommendation is a little white poodle. The children can play "Dare to touch the dog" or "Try to take her food". Good Luck Dan, Tina and boys!- Sharon

I think english bulldogs are the best dogs for families! They are really good with children & pretty relaxed.

Little yorkies are great and so darn cute! Ours follows my every step and stands between my ankles if I am standing in the kitchen preparing dinner. They are extremely loyal. I wouldn’t get a toy like mine with small children, I am always afraid I will step on her. They have the cutest personalities and are always in a good mood.

Hi!

I suggest them to get a Pom-Poo - I just lost my sweet pom-poo a couple of weeks ago and she was a fabulous breed for a family, great with children and she didn't shed her fur!

Greetings, What kind of dog did they have? My brother was a veterinarian for 33 years before he passed away 8 years ago. Unless breeds have changed since then and they can, I would suggest a Beagle or a yellow Labrador. Of course, mixed breeds are usually the healthiest and friendliest because they haven't been inner bred. Females tend to be a better choice than males. Sorry, guys! Thanks,Cindi

I think this family should go to an animal shelter to adopt their new family member. I belive if they really look for the signs their beloved Scout will stear them towards the right dog for his family

I would highly recommend a Shitzu. We have had our for 11 years and she has grown up with my kids. They love children and people of all ages. Ours is very well behaved and definitely a member of our family!

Love your website! I have always had large dogs and my favorites are Golden Retrievers and Labs.

I would pick a mixed breed to avoid health issued due to inbreeding. Get the smarts of one breed and the fun loving of another and you've got the best of both worlds. The gal with the Pom Poo sounds like a good dog.

My friend with two boys got a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel. The Cavaliers love people, aren't too big, are hardy and like to play, and get along with other dogs. Great choice for kids. My brother, who had never owned a dog in his life, got a Cavalier after meeting my friends dog and just loves his new buddy. Did I mention that Cav's like to cuddle too?

To be honest i think the Burkes should get a yorkie. I have had my easy lifting yorkie 3 years. She is always filled up with energy.

Labs are such a good choice for family! They crazy intelligent and love to be loved. Chocolate labs are my favorite, they just look like they have velvet fur. And if you have an open mind, I think adopting from a no-kill shelter is such a good thing to do! Good Luck!

I second the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel suggestion as well as a cavalier mix. They are the friendliest dogs, are loyal and do great with kids. My parents have had one for the past 5 years. I recently got a "Cockalier" puppy. He's a Cocker Spaniel/Cavalier King Charles mix. I think he has great Cavalier qualities and hopefully none of the health problems cavaliers are prone to-such as heart problems and dysplasia.

My recommendation is either a Labrador retriever or Golden Retriever. We actually have one of each. They are great with kids, very loyal and also make a great watchdog. Their main goal in life is to please you! As long as you don't mind playing fetch, these guys are amazing dogs!

I agree with Sandy that a shelter dog can be the best! More important than the breed is the dog's temperment! Check out the dog training books by the Monks of New Skete. We had a very agressive dog, and had to give him up when our daughter was born, we used the Monk's advice to choose our next dog and she is better then we could have imagined. Everyone that meets her feels the same way too! I would look for a sweet dog who needs a new home, but check out the Monks, they know what they are talking about!

FWIW, our dog is a lab/collie mix and she is very sweet. My mom has a beagle/sheltie mix who is very sweet, but the beagle instincts sometimes kick in. The sheltie/collie famiy would be my first place to start!

I recently added a little Goldendoodle to my family. She is a Poodle / Golden Retreiver mix and is a non-shedding dog who is also good for families with allergies. (F1B generations are little to no shed, but make sure you research which generation the breeder sells, b/c different generations produce very different physical traits).
They are extremely smart and very sweet and laid back.

My sister has two children about the same age and got not one, but two cockapoos, after they lost their beloved family dog. They are a bundle of energy for the children to play with. They do not shed, which is a real plus if the dog is an inside dog, and have great personalities!
